“Four hugs a day for survival” is a video installation showing 20 different people self-hugging.
“We need four hugs a day for survival. We need 8 hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth.” That’s what science tells us. How do we maintain this in a time where the pandemic has puts us all on a hugging rehab?
There are the awkward once, the comradely and the more intimate of its kind. Hugs exist in many shades. And the warm hugs are a necessity for our mental and physical well-being. During a hug, the hormone oxytocin is released with a healing effect on the body and the mind. According to science the sweet spot is found to be 20 seconds of continuous hugging in order for the hormone to be released and to start to make a difference.
The installation portrays 20 different people in 20 different self-hugging moments - each of them in a 20 seconds long hug.
